Most visitors never tell you your website is slow. They simply leave. On a phone with patchy mobile data, a page that takes too long to appear feels broken — and a competitor is one tap away.

Speed isn't only about patience. It affects how many visitors turn into enquiries or orders, and it is one of the signals search engines use to judge page experience. The good news: most slow sites are slow for a handful of fixable reasons.

## How speed is measured: Core Web Vitals

Google's **Core Web Vitals** are a practical way to think about speed from a visitor's point of view:

- **Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)** — how quickly the main content (usually the big headline or hero image) appears. Google's guidance is to aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
- **Interaction to Next Paint (INP)** — how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less.
- **Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)** — how much the page jumps around while loading. Aim for 0.1 or less.

You can check your own site for free with **PageSpeed Insights**, which shows both lab measurements and, for sites with enough traffic, data from real visitors.

## The usual suspects behind a slow site

### 1. Huge images

Photos uploaded straight from a camera or phone can be many times larger than needed. Serving modern formats like **WebP or AVIF**, at the size the screen actually displays, often makes the biggest single difference.

### 2. Too much JavaScript

Sliders, chat widgets, trackers and page builders all add code that phones must download and run. Every script you remove — or load only when needed — makes the page faster and more responsive.

### 3. Heavy themes and page builders

Many ready-made themes load features for every possible use, whether you need them or not. A leaner build ships only what your pages use.

### 4. Slow hosting

Cheap shared hosting can be slow to respond, especially at busy times. A good host, caching and a content delivery network (CDN) bring pages closer to your visitors.

### 5. Layout jumps

Images and ads without reserved space push content around as they load. Setting dimensions on images and embeds fixes CLS and makes the page feel calmer.

### 6. Web fonts loaded the hard way

Fonts from third-party servers add extra connections. Self-hosting a small number of compressed font files, preloading the important ones and showing text immediately with a fallback keeps text visible.

## A practical speed checklist

- Compress and resize every image; use WebP or AVIF
- Lazy-load images below the first screen
- Remove plugins, widgets and trackers you don't use
- Self-host fonts and limit the number of weights
- Use caching and a CDN
- Reserve space for images, videos and embeds
- Test on a mid-range phone, not only on a fast laptop

## Speed is a feature, not a finish line

Every new plugin, image or campaign tag can slow a site down again. Fast sites stay fast because someone checks them regularly.

When we build websites and stores at Web Zosh, performance is designed in from the start — modern frameworks that send very little JavaScript, optimised images, self-hosted fonts and monitoring after launch.
